CELL PHONE

While travelling in Italy if you are planning on using a cell phone, it is wise to plan ahead. There are several choices depending on your needs.
  1. You may rent a phone, or buy one here.
  2. If you have the GSM phone and it is capable of international roaming, you must let the carrier know you will be travelling and using your phone. Check the rates and plan ahead of time.
  3. If you have a phone that is “unlocked” and operates with a sim card, you may get a local Italian number by purchasing a “pay as you go” sim card. When you install the sim card in your phone you are able to make calls for far less within Italy. It is also about half price to call the US. On the other hand if someone from the US calls your Italian cell phone, the receiving person (you) pays for the call.
Most phones are “locked” in the US, meaning they only operate with the carrier or provider you have a contract with. There is a way to unlock them but it will take research. You can tell if your phone is “locked” by inserting a different providers sim card into the phone. It will work if your phone is unlocked.
  1. You may use the local phones. Hotels will charge various rates. You can also buy a prepaid international calling card as well as a local prepaid card for use in public telephones.
Don’t forget your phone charger and a 2 prong electrical adapter. Adapters can be easily purchased and are not expensive... when the shops are open.
